Todd Hewitt and Ben: adoptive love, protection, and separation

The Knife of Never Letting Go

Todd Hewitt and Ben’s relationship is a bond of parental love built under coercive circumstances: Ben and Cillian raised Todd to keep him safe, even as doing so implicated them in the violence of Prentisstown. When Todd finds Ben again, their reunion brings tenderness, grief, and a belated explanation of the choice that shaped all three lives. Ben’s refusal to go with Todd to Haven makes their separation painful, but his final words affirm both his pride in Todd and the care that has carried him toward adulthood.

A bond formed through protection

Ben and Cillian were the people who kept Todd safe when his mother could no longer protect him herself. Ben explains that Todd’s mother had organized some girls and younger boys to flee across the swamp, but Mayor Prentiss’s men attacked before she could escape with the women and the men who had not lost their minds. Todd was too young to be sent away, so she entrusted him to Ben and Cillian and asked them to keep him safe. Their care was therefore not an incidental kindness: it was the answer to a parent’s desperate decision in a community where escape had become dangerous and time had run out.

That history gives the relationship its moral complexity. Ben and Cillian’s protection kept Todd alive, but it required them to remain inside Prentisstown and become complicit in what was wrong there. Viola puts the dilemma plainly: they could die fighting for what was right and leave Todd unprotected, or stay and preserve his life while being implicated in the wrongdoing. Todd initially struggles even to understand the word “complicit”; the emotional fact lands first. He recognizes that the horror he has learned about was endured, in part, so he could live. His bond with Ben thus joins love to a cost Todd did not know he had been made to carry.

Reunion shadowed by loss

When Todd sees Ben again, affection arrives through an unguarded physical gesture. Unsure what to do with his hands, he grabs the front of Ben’s shirt and shakes him, an awkward action that carries the force of love. Ben answers with a nod and a smile, but the creases around his eyes prompt Todd to ask about Cillian. Ben does not explain in words; his Noise shows Cillian among the dead in a farmhouse already burning, with some of Mayor Prentiss’s men there too, while Ben runs back toward the flames and grieves. Todd has long suspected the truth, yet seeing Ben’s grief makes the loss newly immediate.

The reunion is therefore not a restoration of the family Todd remembers or longs for. Ben is present, but Cillian is not; the grief visible in Ben’s Noise is inseparable from their shared past. Todd reaches for him as someone he loves, while the scene also makes clear that the life Ben and Cillian built around protecting him has been broken by violence. The surviving bond has to hold both reunion and bereavement at once.

Care that cannot become escape

Todd’s first response to Ben’s refusal is to try to resume the practical work of caring for him. He takes Ben’s arm and urges him toward the footbridge, offering food and a doctor. Ben does not move. Instead, he asks Viola to watch for anything from the settlement or the road and to alert them. Even in the midst of reunion, he remains attentive to danger and asks for help keeping watch. The exchange places his care for Todd within the continuing threat around them, rather than allowing it to become a private refuge from events.

Todd tells Ben that an army is after him and mentions Aaron, but assumes that now Ben is there they can go together. Ben answers that he cannot come. Todd protests, yet Ben insists that Todd knows why: Ben is the enemy. His refusal is not a rejection of Todd’s love. It marks the boundary imposed by the conflict and by Ben’s own position within it. Todd wants to bring Ben into the safety of the journey to Haven; Ben understands that his presence cannot simply be detached from the history that has made him an enemy.

Atonement and the meaning of fatherhood

Ben names his continued protection of Todd as an attempt to atone for the wrong he has done. The statement does not erase that wrong or make the past uncomplicated; instead, it describes care as an obligation Ben has continued to meet. His commitment connects the reason he and Cillian stayed with Todd’s present survival. What Todd once experienced simply as being raised and kept safe is revealed as the consequence of a morally painful choice, one that Ben still understands as his responsibility.

The age Todd is approaching gives their parting a further significance. Ben tells him that his birthday is sixteen days away, but also insists that Todd has already been a man for a long while. The reassurance counters a coming-of-age threshold with a judgment rooted in what Todd has endured and done. Ben then gives Viola the binoculars behind Todd’s back, embraces Todd, and tells him, “No father could be prouder.” The gesture is practical as well as intimate: Ben helps equip the person who must continue without him, even as he holds him one last time.

Separation, inheritance, and hope

Todd protests that the separation is unfair, and Ben agrees. Neither man pretends that love makes the circumstances just. Ben pulls away only after reminding Todd that there is hope at the end of the road. His words do not promise that they will be reunited or that the dangers ahead will disappear. They leave Todd with something more restrained: an affirmation that the journey should continue and that the future is not exhausted by loss.

The relationship’s final movement is consequently both a parting and an inheritance. Ben cannot accompany Todd to Haven, but he gives him recognition, an explanation of the past, and a clear declaration of pride. Todd’s understanding of Ben deepens as he learns what keeping him safe demanded; Ben’s love is neither separated from moral compromise nor cancelled by it. Their bond is defined by the difficult fact that protection preserved Todd’s life, while the people who protected him could not all remain beside him.
